OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY
The Council is committed to understanding the concerns of employers regarding worker safety, insurance costs, regulatory and other issues that impact the workplace. In 2022, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 5,486 fatal workplace injuries which is a 5.7% rise in total worker deaths from 2021 which was 5,190. The fatal work injury rate was 3.7 fatalities per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers, up from 3.6 per 100,000 FTE in 2021.
The St. Joseph Safety and Health Council is dedicated to assisting area employers decrease the chances of this occurring in their facilities. We offer a variety of safety training programs and events designed to assist employers in providing a safer working environment for employees, as well as meet standards set forth in the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970.

The Safety Council partners with certified training specialists in the field of Occupational Safety and Health to provide quality training on the subjects that you are most concerned about within your company.

This course will help companies comply with OSHA Standard 1910.178. Specifically, Train-the-Trainer provides the skills necessary to teach the classroom and hands-on required component of lift truck safety. Participants will learn: skills and techniques for safe lift truck operation and maintenance, practical information for developing an in-house training program, exercises for evaluating hands-on performance by your operators, and how to educate non-operators on working safely around lift trucks.

The HAZMAT 8-hour Refresher course is meant for HAZMAT / HAZWOPER personnel who have previously completed a 24 or 40-hour course and are required to have eight hours of annual refresher training. This program meets the needs of employees that must be updated on HAZMAT information and skills covering topics such as: laws and regulations, health hazards, references, operations, personal protection equipment, and decontamination.

Course Goals:
Understand key elements of the OSHA Lockout/Tagout regulation.
Establish the purpose for lockout/tagout.
Recognize the key components of an energy control program.
Identify the six main elements that should be contained in lockout/tagout procedures.
Identify key elements of a periodic inspection of the energy control procedure.
Identify steps to be followed when removing an energy control device to restore energy to equipment.
Recognize group lockout/tagout procedures and requirements for using group lockout/tagout devices.

Machine guarding training equips workers with the knowledge and skills to identify and mitigate hazards associated with machinery, ensuring safe operation and preventing injuries, while also covering OSHA regulations and best practices.

This course is designed for construction workers, foremen and job supervisors. The training program provides workers general awareness on recognizing and preventing hazards on a construction site and covers a variety of construction safety and health hazards. Workers must receive additional training on hazards specific to their jobs, such as fall protection, scaffolding, etc. Training emphasizes hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention.

This two-day course is designed to provide participants with basic information on how to comply worth OSHA general industry standards. Participants will understand employer/ employee rights and responsibilities under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, learn how OSHA inspections are conducted, identify OSHA expectations for your safety and health programs, identify key provisions of the ten most often cited standards, and get up-to-date on the latest changes to OSHA standards.

Master the safety guidelines found in 29 CFR 1926 and earn your official OSHA 30 card from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). This 30-hour training program prepares construction workers of all skill levels to recognize, avoid, prevent and abate hazards in the workplace.

The OSHA 30-Hour General Industry course is a training program that teaches workers how to recognize, avoid, and prevent workplace hazards. The course covers a range of topics, including:
OSHA's role in regulating employee safety
Employees' rights and employer responsibilities
Hazards in the workplace, such as electrical hazards, bloodborne pathogens, and fall protection
How to identify and correct hazards and violations
The importance of a company's health and safety programs
The Globally Harmonized System of Classification
The difference between confined spaces and permit required confined spaces
The course is intended for supervisors and workers who need a more in-depth understanding of workplace hazards. It can be beneficial for workers in a variety of fields, including manufacturing, storage, warehousing, factory operations, and healthcare.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive an OSHA 30-hour training card and certificate from the Department of Labor.

Ensure that a respirator is comfortable and provides the wearer with the expected protection. Fit testing is a procedure that verifies the seal between the respirator and the wearer's face. Training can be used to prepare for fit testing and to refresh knowledge.

Meet our Trainers:

George Albert is a retired Fire Chief, Emergency Management Director, and Region H Training Coordinator. George has decades of experience and is ready to train employees to meet OSHA standards. He holds an instructor certificate for Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, Confined Space, and an Emergency Management Certification.
George was awarded the University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute Instructor of the year award for 2022/2023.

Todd Sieleman retired as the Assistant Area Director of the Kansas City OSHA Office where he oversaw the effective administration of federal laws protecting employees within companies in the Western half of the state of Missouri.
While at OSHA, Todd additionally served as a Compliance Assistance Specialist providing training & education to meet all regulatory mandates.

Frank Till is the Executive Director of the St. Joseph Safety and Health Council.
Prior to his employment with the Safety Council, he was a Law Enforcement Officer for 37 years. Serving with the St. Joseph Police Dept., the Buchanan County Drug Strike Force and ending his career in Law Enforcement as the Chief of Police at the Village of Country Club MO.
Frank has served on the Missouri Narcotic Officers Association Executive Board for over 25 years and has taught classes to Law Enforcement Officers and Community groups across the United States. In 2018 Frank was hired as a part time Instructor for Federal Resources (now NOBLE) where he instructs various classes on illegal drugs and drug testing equipment.
