Get Ready for the Missouri Written Permit Test

Permit Academy is a four-hour workshop designed to help participants better understand the information covered in the Missouri Driver Guide. Through instruction, discussion, and practice questions, participants can build their knowledge and feel more confident about taking the written permit test.

Permit Academy is a test-preparation workshop. The official permit test is not administered during the class.

Statistics indicate that traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among individuals aged 15 to 19 in our country. This situation is concerning and requires our collective attention.

  • The St. Joseph Safety Council has developed a study curriculum which assists (pre-permitted) teens to prepare for their written test to obtain a Missouri Driving Permit.

    There are practice tests administered at the end of the course for confidence building.

    • Class length: Four hours

    • Attendance options: In person or live through Zoom, based on age

    • Minimum enrollment: At least five students are required for a class to be held

    • Cost: $40.00

    • Materials: We provide pencils, highlighters, and Missouri Driver’s Guide.

    Virtual participants will receive the Zoom information and any class instructions before the scheduled workshop.

    • Teens ages 13–19: May attend in person or virtually through Zoom.

    • Adults ages 20 and older: May attend virtually through Zoom.

  • Permit Academy covers important Missouri driving topics, including:

    • Rules of the road

    • Traffic signs and signals

    • Road sign recognition

    • Defensive-driving basics

    • Occupant-restraint and seat belt laws

    • Safe-driving responsibilities

    • Practice permit-test questions

    Participants will complete practice tests at the end of the workshop to help identify areas that may need additional study.

    • Classes require a minimum of five registered students.

  • Thank you for registering for the Permit Academy. We understand that unexpected situations can arise, and we strive to be as flexible as possible while maintaining fairness and the integrity of our program.

    Rescheduling Our Preferred Option

    If you are unable to attend your scheduled Permit Academy session, we strongly encourage you to reschedule for a future class.

    • Rescheduling is free of charge if requested at least 24 hours in advance.

    • Space in future sessions is subject to availability.

    • Rescheduling helps ensure that you still receive the full value of the course.

    Refund Policy

    • Refunds are not guaranteed and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

    • Requests for refunds must be made at least 48 hours before the scheduled class.

    • A $10 administrative fee will be deducted from all approved refunds.

    No Refunds Will Be Issued For:

    • No-shows or missed classes without prior notice

    • Cancellations made less than 48 hours before the class

    • Students who arrive late and are unable to participate

    Additional Information

    • You may transfer your registration to another participant (such as a sibling or friend) upon request and approval.

    • Please contact us as early as possible if you need to make changes to your registration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my teen need to already have a permit?

No. Permit Academy is designed to help participants prepare for the written test required to obtain a learner’s permit.

Can adults attend Permit Academy?

Yes. Adults age 20 and older may participate through the live Zoom option.

Is the official permit test given during class?

No. Permit Academy provides instruction and practice questions, but it does not administer the official Missouri permit test.

Can teens attend through Zoom?

Yes. Participants ages 13–19 may choose an available in-person or Zoom option.

What happens if a class is canceled?

If a class cannot be held or does not meet the minimum enrollment of five students, registered participants will be contacted with additional information.
