Personalized Behind-the-Wheel Instruction
Private driving lessons provide individualized instruction for permitted drivers who want additional experience, help developing specific skills, or greater confidence behind the wheel.
Each lesson is tailored to the participant’s current experience and areas where additional practice is needed.
INTERESTED IN SPONSORING A TEEN OR ADULT FOR PRIVATE DRIVING LESSONS?
The St. Joseph, MO program is open to residents of Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas. We teach you to drive step by step. Students will not receive any classroom instruction in this program. It’s strictly behind the wheel instruction. Driving lessons are scheduled with a qualified driving instructors.

How long is each lesson?
Each private driving lesson is two hours.
Do I schedule the appointment separately?
No. You will choose an available appointment while completing the online registration.
Is a vehicle provided?
Yes. Lessons are conducted in a driver-training vehicle provided by the St. Joseph Safety & Health Council.
Does the participant need a permit?
Yes. A valid learner’s permit or driver’s license is required. A copy must be submitted before the scheduled lesson.
How many lessons should I purchase?
The number of lessons needed depends on the participant’s experience, confidence, and driving goals. Participants may begin with one lesson and schedule additional instruction if needed.
Is this a complete Driver’s Education course?
No. Private driving lessons provide behind-the-wheel instruction only. They do not include the classroom portion of the Council’s full Driver’s Education program.

A copy of the participant’s valid learner’s permit must be provided after registration and before the lesson can take place.

Year round, weather permitting (excluding June & July)
Mondays & Wednesdays 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm, and 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm.
Tuesdays & Thursdays 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm, 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm.
Saturdays 9:00 am - 11:00 am, 11:30 am - 1:30 pm, and 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Each session is 2 hours long
Cost:
$130 for 1 session.
$240 for 2 sessions.
$360 for 3 sessions.

Depending on the participant’s experience and needs, instruction may include:
Vehicle controls and basic operation
Starting, stopping, and smooth braking
Turns and proper lane positioning
Intersections and traffic signals
Lane changes and merging
Parking and backing
Residential and city driving
Defensive-driving techniques
Identifying and responding to roadway hazards
Building confidence behind the wheel
Private lessons provide additional driving practice but do not replace Missouri’s licensing requirements or guarantee that a participant will pass the driving test.

Participants should arrive approximately 10 minutes before their scheduled lesson. The instructor will review the participant’s experience and goals before beginning the drive.
Please bring:
The participant’s original learner’s permit or driver’s license
Any corrective lenses required for driving
Comfortable, secure shoes suitable for operating a vehicle
